Five Fresh Honeymoon Ideas
It’s no secret that when it comes to honeymoons, French Polynesia (Bora Bora) and Italy reign supreme and for good reason! Is there anything more romantic than lounging in your bathrobe from the comfort of your overwater bungalow in Bora Bora or sipping cocktails while admiring the unobstructed views of the Tyrrhenian Sea from the balcony of your perfect Amalfi Hotel? While it’s hard to go wrong with either of these destinations, here are a few more of my favorite Honeymoon destinations.
Sri Lanka and The Maldives
Sri Lanka literally has it all - amazing temples (8 UNESCO world heritage sites), beautiful culture (the oldest practicing Buddhist country in the world), some of the most amazing wildlife outside of Africa (elephants, blue whales, wild peacocks and the densest leopard population in the world) not to mention beautiful landscapes lush, rolling hills of tea plants and pristine beaches. Did I mention that the idyllic beaches of the Maldives are a mere 1.5 hour plane-ride away?
Who is it perfect for? Couples seeking to pair adventure with beach relaxation. Those who have fallen in love with other Asian countries or Buddhist Culture.
When to go? December to April is a great time to visit when The Maldives experience their dry season as do the gorgeous and golden Southern beaches of Sri Lanka (this is where you can see the iconic stilt fisherman as well!)
It’s true that this Southern African country is a favorite of Prince Harry’s and was reported to be the destination of his first vacation with his future bride, Meghan Markle, but the reasons to visit are infinite. Thanks the country’s great conservation efforts, it provides some of the greatest game viewing in all of Africa without the crowds. It pairs perfectly with Victoria Falls and/ or South Africa.
Who is it perfect for? Those who have always dreamt of going on safari and witnessing the thundering glory of Victoria Falls in Zambia/ Zimbabwe
When to go? May to September offer the driest weather and most moderate temperatures
Indonesia (not just Bali)
Bali is wonderful and amazing (it’s the first country that I visited outside of North America when I was 13 and I have been back to visit several times since) but there are so many other spectacular islands to see as well! You could visit Borobudur, one of the world’s most amazing Buddhist temples in Java, hang with Orangutans in Kilamantan (Indonesian Borneo) or witness the beautiful run of wild horses on Sumba. The possibilities are endless. All of these can be easily paired with Bali for a rich and culturally immersive experience.
Who is it perfect for? Those who have always wanted to visit Bali and who are interested in exploring other parts of Indonesia as well
When to go? May, June and July are generally considered the best months to visit
Romantic Cross-Country Train Ride
When it comes to glamorous train rides, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, operated by Belmond Luxury Travel, takes the cake. This art deco icon can whisk you across Europe and take you back in time to the Golden Age of Travel. Once a year, the Orient Express takes makes a round trip journey from Paris to Istanbul. Belmond also offers fantastic train journeys through Scotland, Ireland and even Peru!
Who is it perfect for? Those seeking a luxurious and wonderfully unique experience.
When to go? It varies depending on the train and route. The Venice Simplon-Orient Express operates from March to September.
Cruising doesn’t have to mean to mean being stuck on a boat with hoards of other people while adhering to an uninspired itinerary. Many, many cruise lines offer so much more. Those seeking a smaller more intimate cruise experience may find that river or barge cruising suits them perfectly. There are ultra-luxe cruises for those feeling fancy and expedition cruises for adventurers.
Who is it perfect for? Couple interested in exploring a region while only having to unpack once!
